Centennial of RFD Mail Service

The 92nd Convention of the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association in Charleston, West Virginia -was-the site c-hosen-to-issue this new stamp. It marks 100 years of RFD postal service to the country. The stamp is based on a photograph of an early rural carrier standing by his horse-drawn mail wagon.

Wanting to build on this theme, I decided to depict in my handpainted cachet an early mail wagon with a horse hitched to it. The carrier holds the bridle and stands in front of an 1800's post office. The watercolors make this one come alive and it is a wonderful example of "Americana". I always think it is especially fitting when a new stamp or one of my cachets has a post office or mail theme because that is, after all, what our First Day hobby is built from.
