Hanukkah

Nine Candels

Spring 2024 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 23 U260I — Hanukkah — (First U.S. Hanukkah Stamp) — 10-22-96

In 2019, the U.S. Postal Service issued the very first Hanukkah stamp. The stamp design is based on the Jewish Festival of Lights. It features a contemporary image of a menorah and nine multi-colored candles. With each of the candles being a different vivid color, the stamp is certainly an eye-catcher. The glow of the candles' flames rekindles the family bonds that comfort and sustain throughout the year. My hand painted cachet extends this theme as a group of children play a favorite game of spinning a dreidel. Many treats have been used in playing the game, and I show two of the more common ones — foil-covered chocolates and peanuts. Also, there is a close-up of the wooden dreidel that I used as a model. Behind the children is a menorah burning brightly. It is a silver color with blue candles. Finally, I have printed a verse from a children's poem about the beloved dreidel which can be made from many materials including clay, wood, glass, and others and which themselves are deemed desirable collectibles. In speaking at the stamp's dedication, Postmaster General Marvin Runyon said the following. "The traditions of Hanukkah hold special meaning for celebrants around the world and for millions of Americans. It's also a tale of universal appeal. A story of triumph over adversity, strength in conviction, and a belief in the possibility of miracles."
