Thornton Wilder - Playwright and Novelist

Collins Cover Announcement

Thornton Wilder

"Our Town" has been described by many as the most popular American play of all time. On the surface, it was a picture of life and death in Grover's Corners - a small New Hampshire village. But, in reality, it was in Wilder's own words, "an attempt to find a value above all price for the smallest events in our daily lives." The play has become a fixture with high school and college drama departments all over the country.

At the time the stamp was issued, Postmaster Gen. Marvin Runyon made the following remarks. "Thornton Wilder is one of the most celebrated writers of our time. Theaters continue to bring to the stage his unique ability to present everyday life in a haunting and imaginative evocation of birth, marriage, and death. His contributions to the literary scene are everlasting."

My handpainted cachet captures the small-town flavor of Grover's Corners in the New Hampshire countryside. It features a marriage with townspeople in attendance with a cemetery and church nearby. It definitely captures the small-town, event-related theme that the author used time after time.

This is a very nice First day Cover, and I am happy to offer it for your collection. The stamp was issued on the 100th Anniversary of the birth of this three-time Pulitzer Prize winner. Literary great Thornton Niven Wilder. Item #J2701. $11.75
