Paul "Bear" Bryant


Paul Bryant won his nickname while still in high school. At a theater promotion, he wrestled a bear to the ground, and his life-long nickname was born.


The six-foat, four-inch "Bear" played football at the University of Alabama from 1933 to 1935. After duty with the U.S. Navy, Bryant coached at Maryland, Kentucky, and Texas A&M, In 1956 he returned to Alabama as Head Coach of the Crimson Tide.


While there, his record was 323 wins against only SS losses and 17 ties. At the time of his retirement in 1983, he was the winningest coach in U.S. collegiate football history. During his years at Alabama, he won six National Championships.
