LEGENDARY FOOTBALL COACHES

Glenn "Pop" Warner

A touchdown counted as four points, and a field goal was five when Glenn Scobey Warner played his first football game in 1892. Over the next 45 years, Warner was one of the major innovators that changed the game from an exercise in brute force during the era of the flying wedge to a contest that combined strength, speed, agility, and strategy.

He is credited with inventing the three-point stance, the single and double wing formations, the unbalanced line, the shifting defense, the spiral punt, the screen pass, early thigh and shoulder pads, the tackling dummy, and numerals on jerseys.

He graduated from Cornell University (and is so shown in my hand-painted cachet) and over his career coached there as well as the Universities of Georgia, Pittsburgh, Stanford, and Temple. His teams at Pittsburgh and Stanford won national championships. He was an excellent teacher and role model and is the namesake of Pop Warner Football - a sanctioning body for youth leagues throughout the country.

A legendary coach who was usually years ahead of the rule book - Glenn "Pop" Warner. Item #S2704. $11.75.
