Legends of Hollywood
Humphrey Bogart
Humphrey DeForest Bogart was born in New York City in 1899. His father was a surgeon and his mother a magazine illustrator. In World War I he served in the Navy and afterwards took bit parts in the theater. His acting potential became apparent when he appeared as a gangster in a movie entitled The Petrified Forest.
Signed to a contract by Warner Brothers Studios, Bogart starred in a number of hit films. They included High Sierra; The Maltese Falcon; Casablanca; The Big Sleep; Key Largo; and The Treasure of the Siuerra Madre.
In 1951 he won an Oscar for his starring role in the classic film The African Queen. He played a drunken streamer captain named Charlie Allnut opposite Karherine Hepburn who portrayed missionary Rose Sayer. It is an exciting adventure as Charlie and Rose try to escape the Nazis in his boat "The African Queen." During their dash for freedom they battle the jungle river and also slip into a unique romantic relationship. The film builds to a surprising and exciting conclusion.
My hand-painted cachet, done in a style reminiscent of early movie posters, features the various elements of this famous movie. Bogart as "Charlie" - the lovable but crude steamer captain. Hepburn as "Rose" - the prim and proper missionary. The dilapidated steamer "The African Queen" moored in the background. A lioness and crocodile representing the jungle and of course the ever-present tropical river on which they hope to escape. This cachet came out really great and I believe that this will become a classic Collins First Day Cover.
As a reminder, my first two covers in the Legends of Hollywood Series (Marilyn Monroe and James Dean) sold out quite quickly and are now difficult to obtain. Humphrey Bogart is truly a Hollywood icon and I have no doubt that this cover will also sell out rapidly. A Collins cachet that will become a very sought after item. Charlie and Rose with the steamer they will sail into movie history - The African Queen. Item #U2701 - $11.75.
