Lawrence Tibbett
The most memorable operatic creation of Tibbett was that of the evil lago in Othello. This character has often been described as Shakespeare's most consummate villain. My handpainted cachet (a true miniature work of art) shows Tibbett as the sinister lago in the sleeping chamber of the lovely Desdemona. The design and watercolors of this Collins combine to make it absolutely stunning.
Lawrence Tibbett was the very first American male opera singer to achieve stardom without any European training or stage experience. The extensive range of his powerful baritone voice enabled him to excel in operatic repertory as well as in modern music. In addition to his marvelous portrayal of lago in Othello, he starred in the title roles of Rigoletto and Simon Boccanegra. The colorful stamp shows him as the toreador in Carmen. His career spanned 27 seasons and 49 roles at the Met.
The sinister villain lago plots his evil schemes as the fair and innocent Desdemona blissfully sleeps. From the stage performance of Othello, Tibbets lago is captured forever on this hand-painted Collins First Day Cover. Opera star Lawrence Tibbett. Item #W2703. $11.75.
Now that this set has been completed, there is no doubt in my mind in that it is the finest group of cachets created for these new opera stamps in the Legends of American Music Series.
