Classical Conductors
Leopold Stokowski - Conductor
Collins Cover Announcement
Classical Conductors
Leopold Stokowski
Born in London, Stokowski was the first conductor to lead the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra which is the fifth oldest in the United States. This city is also the current home of the Classical Music Hall of Fame and thus was chosen as the First Day of Issue location for these stamps.
After completing his time in Cincinnati, he conducted the Philadelphia Symphony for a quarter of a century. Over the years he developed a well earned reputation for giving children's concerts and introducing them to the world of classical music. Stokowski's work in this area was rewarded in 1941 when he was chosen by Walt Disney to conduct the score for the hit animated musical film "Fantasia."
My hand-painted cachet is a true beauty and builds on Leopold's love of making his performances special for children. He often used live animals and pets during his stage shows because youngsters always relate to them so well. For this Collins First Day Cover I show a rehearsal in which the famous conductor is surrounded by doves, two dogs, and a llama. Also in the cachet is an early victrola with the familiar audio horn.
This is an excellent addition for your collection as it combines classical music and appealing animals which will, in the future, make it a very sought-after item. A conductor who gained his most fame by his work on Disney's "Fantasia" but perhaps should be best remembered by his continuous efforts to introduce the classics to children through innovative performances--Leopold Stokowski. Item #X2701. $11.75.
