Classical Composers
Ferde Grofe - Composer
Collins Cover Announcement
Famous Composers
Ferde Broie
Born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles, Grofe came from a family of classical musicians. For ten years, he played viola with the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra. He also gained fame as an arranger with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.
He developed a composing style that included the introduction of unconventional sounds such as typewriters, sirens and pneumatic drills. His "San Francisco Suite" features the sounds of cable car bells and Bay area foghorns.
Grofe wrote two ballets and also several scores for motion pictures. "Grand Canyon Suite" is by far his most famous work, and it was the inspiration for my hand-painted cachet. I think that this panoramic scene featuring one of the famous Grand Canyon mules will make this an acclaimed cover and a strong contender for "Best of Issue." A very appealing and eyecatching cachet that will definitely contribute to the ever-growing reputation of Collins First Day Covers. Composer Ferde Grofe and his "Grand Canyon Suite." Item #Y2702. $11.75.
