Louis Moreau Gottschalk - Composer

Collins Cover Announcement

Famous Composers

Louis Moreau Gottschalk

At an early age while studying in France, Louis gained notoriety not only for his musical compositions but also for his reputation as a ladies' man. My hand-painted cachet captures both of his passions as he is flanked by a trio of admiring and flirtatious young women on one side and a piano on the other. The visual flow on this First Day Cover is very nice and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Gottschalk was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and demonstrated unusual skill as an organist at an early age. He was sent to Paris to study music at age 13 and began producing notable compositions by the time he was 20. He quickly became a success story throughout Europe both for his composition work and his many romances.

Upon returning to the United States, he found that his reputation was initially less celebrated on this side of the Atlantic. As he traveled extensively throughout this country and the Caribbean, his fame grew by his giving countless recitals and composing numerous piano works. Three of his best known compositions are Le Banjo, Last Hope, and Dying Poet. Forever he will have fame in our First Day Cover hobby on a Collins cachet that puts him with his two great loves--a piano and a group of attractive and admiring young women. Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Item #Y2704. $11.75.
