Stephen Vincent Bene - Poet, Short Story Writer, and Novelist
Collins Cover Announcement
Stephen Vincent Benet
Civil War Poet
A very distinctive hand painted "entire" cachet makes this I-DC one that will always be a great collectible. It shows the burning of the arsenal during the raid on Harper's Ferry. The setting of the cachet is at night, and the flames against the black sky and the glowing reflections amidst the evening shadows result in a tremendous artistic expression. Citizens and soldiers alike scurry about in the foreground as the building burns in an inferno behind them. A great historic and military cachet. The hand painted visuals make it superb.
This stamp in the Literary Arts Series shows a portrait of Benet and behind him a bronze showing Black Union soldiers. In 1928 he won the Pulitzer Prize for "John Brown's Body" which was a book-length epic poem on the Civil War. The First Day postmark is from Harper's Fern West Virginia. A dramatic cover, I am pleased to present Stephen Vincent Benet - Collins #D2901. $12.25.
