Collins Cover Announcement
SPACE DISCOVERY
SECOND IN A SERIES OF FIVE
The space probe on this hand painted cover speeds through the darkness of a fantasy space voyage. The main circular body of the craft has two wing-like panels extending from its sides to collect and store solar energy. Antennas sprout from top and bottom to maintain communication with a distant earth.
As with the previous one offered in this series, I opted for the fantasy theme and visual impact b y making the meteors and other space bodies more colorful than probably would be found in real life. It makes for a very attractive presentation. The stamp position for the first one offered (Q2901) was the upper right. The stamp position for this one is the lower right.
A dramatic set that will make a sudden impact on anyone who views it. I'm pleased to offer the second of my Space Discovery hand painted covers. Item #Q2902 - $12.25.
Spring 2024 Mail Sale Commentary
Lot 26 02901 to 02905 — Space Discovery (Set of 5) — 10-1-98
When this long-awaited set was released by the USPS, it was entitled "Space Discovery" although the panoramic colonization scenes depicted on the stamps were only artistic renditions of possible futuristic discoveries. Since mankind must explore in order to discover, I decided to show a variety of spaceships from the familiar shuttle to imagined designs of the future. In order to achieve visual impact for collectors, I assumed the fantasy theme that was utilized on the stamps. A black universe dotted with countless stars serves as the background for these hand painted covers. I opted for bright and varied colors to create my own space discoveries of heavenly bodies. The five covers combine to create an exciting look at the uncharted reaches of Outer Space. The bright watercolors against the black heavens provide a vivid sensation of worlds beyond. This is a dramatic and colorful set that will make a sudden impact on anyone who views it. There are probes and a space shuttle, and in the fifth and final cover in the series, the upper stage of the LEM blasting off to return to the command ship is featured. In the distance, earth reminds the viewer that it is from this home planet that mankind will continue what may be a never-ending quest of space discovery as we continue to explore and colonize the universe. This is an eye-catching set of five that has not previously appeared in my mail sales.
