SPACE DISCOVERY
"Blast Off of the LEM"
FIFTH IN A SERIES OF FIVE
This cover concludes the dynamic "Space Discovery" series of five. The hand painted cachet features the lunar module - which was abbreviated to LM - which, in turn, led to it being called the LEM. The main spaceship, or command module, orbits the moon while the LEM descends to the surface. This concept can be used to land on other heavenly bodies as our program of space discovery continues.
The LEM is made up of two main parts. The descent stage (bottom half) lowers the module to a landing on the surface and, after the mission is completed, remains behind and serves as a launch pad for the top or ascent stage. This upper portion then rendezvous with the circling command module.
My hand painted cachet features the upper stage of the LEM blasting off to return to the command ship. In the distance, earth reminds the viewer that it is from this home planet that mankind will continue what may be a never-ending quest of space discovery as we continue to explore and colonize the universe. I'm pleased to offer the fifth and final space cover in this eye-catching set of five. Blast Off of the LEM. Item #Q2905 - $12.25.

Lot 26 02901 to 02905 — Space Discovery (Set of 5) — 10-1-98
When this long-awaited set was released by the USPS, it was entitled "Space Discovery" although the panoramic colonization scenes depicted on the stamps were only artistic renditions of possible futuristic discoveries. Since mankind must explore in order to discover, I decided to show a variety of spaceships from the familiar shuttle to imagined designs of the future. In order to achieve visual impact for collectors, I assumed the fantasy theme that was utilized on the stamps. A black universe dotted with countless stars serves as the background for these hand painted covers. I opted for bright and varied colors to create my own space discoveries of heavenly bodies. The five covers combine to create an exciting look at the uncharted reaches of Outer Space. The bright watercolors against the black heavens provide a vivid sensation of worlds beyond. This is a dramatic and colorful set that will make a sudden impact on anyone who views it. There are probes and a space shuttle, and in the fifth and final cover in the series, the upper stage of the LEM blasting off to return to the command ship is featured. In the distance, earth reminds the viewer that it is from this home planet that mankind will continue what may be a never-ending quest of space discovery as we continue to explore and colonize the universe. This is an eye-catching set of five that has not previously appeared in my mail sales.
