Great Americans
Justin S. Morrill - Politician and Entrepreneur
Cover Announcement
Justin S. Morrill
The Land Grant College Act was introduced by Justin S. Morrill of Vermont. It provided funding for institutions of higher learning in each state. Thirty thousand acres of federal property located in each individual state was to be sold to provide an endowment for at least one land grant college. The main requirement for those universities was that they had to teach agriculture and the mechanical arts.
Justin Morrill was known as the "Father of the Senate" in his day, and his crowning achievement was to sponsor the acts that established the land grant colleges. The new stamp in his honor has a denomination of 55-cents and is the 63rd to be issued in the Great American series.
My hand painted cachet shows a horse-drawn mechanical farm implement and a Cornell University graduate. The application of the education received at the land grant colleges contributed mightily to the agricultural successes of our great and bountiful country. A small sampling of such universities is listed on the cachet. Justin S. Morrill. Item #B3101 - $12.75.
