The final appearance of this FDC exceeded my expectations. A young couple is about to depart the Emerald Isle for America. They are pensive as the reality of the moment wells up inside them. They are anxious to start their new lives across the wide ocean, but a sadness also overwhelms them. They will be leaving the land of their birth and upbringing. They will be leaving their beloved Ireland.

The composition and colors combine wonderfully. The fine new postage stamp showing a sailing ship is at the upper right. The emigrating pair is at the left. Both the stamp and the young couple are shown in rich, subdued colors. Contrasting those tones, the Irish countryside which they flank is portrayed in the bright and picturesque colors that the island is known for. The hand painting makes this one superb. A sweeping panorama to the sea serves as a backdrop to the ancient family homestead. In the foreground, giving perspective to the whole scene, is the Celtic cross.
