 FREDERICK LAW OLMSTED

This mostly unknown and unheralded American has brought enjoyment to countless people in the United States. He was a founder of this country's landscape architecture professional field in the 1800s. His design work included the U.S. Capitol grounds, the grounds of the Chicago's World Fair, New York's Central Park, the Stanford University campus, and the Biltmore estate in Asheville, North Carolina.

There were many possible choices for my cachet, and the final design is a wonderful piece of Americana. It shows an 1872 Sunday afternoon winter scene at the lake in New York's Central Park. A small boy pulls a brother on a sled with help from a pushing sister. Two women, dressed in fashionable finery, complete with hand muffs, catch up on the latest gossip. A young girl and boy, also dressed for what was a social occasion, skate hand in hand. The individual watercoloring of each of my cachets transforms this nostalgic scene into a true miniature work of art. The detail is magnificent, and I believe that you will love having this First Day Cover in your collection.

Olmsted began his career in 1857 when he was commissioned to design Central Park. He went on to become one of America's most prolific park designers. From the late 1800s and all through the century of the 1900s, individuals and families have enjoyed the fruit of his labors. Now as we enter the new century, our leisure time will continue to be enhanced by his legacy. The beauty of this cachet may make it an early sell out. I'm pleased to offer an 1872 winter Sunday afternoon in Central Park. It's a tribute to landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
