The husband and wife team of Lunt and Fontanne were known as the leading couple of the American stage for 34 years. They entertained theatergoers with engaging performances in numerous comedies Their work together brought them national acclaim.

Lynn and Alfred met in 1919 and married three years later. They first appeared together on stage at the Ritz Theater. In 1924, they began a string of twenty-seven consecutive shows in which they starred together. The 1958 production of The Visit was their final stage performance together.
