American Music - Hollywood Composers

Alfred Newman

Collins Cover Announcements

Hollywood Composers

Alfred Newman

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH - 1955

Bus STOP 1 956

Marilyn Monroe

This hand painted First Day Cover completes the set of six that honors Hollywood Composers. Alfred Newman wrote the music for many great movies including How Green Was My Valley, All About Eve, and Airport and three films that starred Hollywood sex icon Marilyn Monroe. they were How to Marry a Millionaire, Bus Stop, and The Seven Year Itch. Famous images from the latter two provide the cachet design for this cover.

It should be noted that when I offered my Marilyn Monroe cover (I2401) in the "Legends of Hollywood" series, it sold out quickly. I believe that the same thing is a distinct possibility here. In fact, this whole "Hollywood Composers" series pays tribute to classic movies and the famous stars who brought them to life in theaters throughout the nation. Make sure that you have all of them in your collection now because in future years they will be difficult to find on the open market - and then only at higher prices.

I'm pleased to offer what will become a key Collins collectible. It's a tribute to Alfred Newman and Marilyn Monroe for their respective musical and acting talents in Bus Stop and The Seven Year Itch. Item #K3105 - $12.25.

Winter 2026 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 28 K3105 — Hollywood Composer Alfred Newman stamp with Marilyn Monroe cachet — 9/16/99

Alfred Newman was an American composer, arranger, and conductor of film music. From his start as a music prodigy, he came to be regarded as a respected figure in the history of film music. He won nine Academy Awards and was nominated 45 times. During his career of more than four decades, Newman composed the scores for over 200 motion pictures, including some with Marilyn Monroe. They worked together on several film soundtracks, primarily those produced by 20th Century Fox in the 1950s, where Monroe was an actress and Newman was a composer and conductor. Their collaborations included songs and music from films like "Bus Stop" in 1956 and "The Seven Year Itch" in 1955 which are highlighted on this first day cover. Marilyn Monroe is always a favorite subject of collectors. This cover with Marilyn highlighted is appearing for the first time in one of my mail sales.
