Winter 2026 Mail Sale Commentary
Lot 28 K3105 — Hollywood Composer Alfred Newman stamp with Marilyn Monroe cachet — 9/16/99
Alfred Newman was an American composer, arranger, and conductor of film music. From his start as a music prodigy, he came to be regarded as a respected figure in the history of film music. He won nine Academy Awards and was nominated 45 times. During his career of more than four decades, Newman composed the scores for over 200 motion pictures, including some with Marilyn Monroe. They worked together on several film soundtracks, primarily those produced by 20th Century Fox in the 1950s, where Monroe was an actress and Newman was a composer and conductor. Their collaborations included songs and music from films like "Bus Stop" in 1956 and "The Seven Year Itch" in 1955 which are highlighted on this first day cover. Marilyn Monroe is always a favorite subject of collectors. This cover with Marilyn highlighted is appearing for the first time in one of my mail sales.
