Ira & George Gershwin

Lady, Be Good! 1924

This brother team worked together from the early 1920s until George's untimely death in 1937 at the age of 38. Ira wrote the lyrics and George composed the music for more than a dozen top shows. Their hit musicals included Of Thee I Sing, Funny Face, Girl Crazy, and Lady, Be Good. Individual hit songs included I Got Rhythm, They Can't Take That Away From Me, and 'S Wonderful.

For my hand painted cachet, I decided to honor the great American dancer Fred Astaire in addition to Ira and George Gershwin. Depicted is a scene from Lady, Be Good showing Fred and his sister Adele. It was the last time that they danced together professionally.

This is a wonderful First Day Cover which honors two famous sibling pairs with almost unlimited musical talent. The brother and sister dance team of Fred and Adele Astaire. And the incomparable brother composing tandem of Ira and George Gershwin. Item #M3101
