Kwanzaa

A truly beautiful representation of the continent of Africa comprises the subject matter for this hand painted cachet. A vibrant topographical map serves as the perfect backdrop for my human, wildlife, and plant cachet subjects. A warm rendering of a Nigerian mother and clinging child in colorful native dress gives this cover a sense of family and roots that the holiday of Kwanzaa symbolizes. A tribal thatched roof hut from a traditional village also represents the family unit.

Going beyond the human aspect, I decided that I would explore and develop a larger African theme for this cover. The rich variety of wildlife is represented by three distinct species. A fearless bull elephant, the spectacular crowned crane, and the lion which reigns as "king of the beasts" all combine to give this individually watercolored FDC a wonderful appearance. As a final touch, I've added an almost ageless baobab tree that in itself is a symbol of the continent in which it grows. I am pleased to offer this exciting, realistic, and colorful Kwanzaa cover. The tinted topographical map, the wild and beautiful animals, and the touching human bond between mother and child will make this cachet a personal favorite. Just as the roots of the baobab sustain life from the native soil, so does the varied life of the continent spring from the bountiful African earth.

Winter 2020 Mail Sale Commentary 

Lot 24 T3101 — Kwanzaa — (10-29-99)

This was the first Kwanzaa stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service to celebrate black culture and heritage. Just like I have started themed series of Collins covers like Christmas Wildlife, I decided to commence a series of Kwanzaa cachets that would depict animals of the homeland — Africa. Over the years, these covers have proved to be very popular, and it all started with this one. I think this will increase in popularity and importance as time goes by. Now is a scarce opportunity to obtain the first one in the series.
