Collins FDC Catalog
Military Working Dogs
German Shepherd
Cover Announcement
This is the first cover in my Military Working Dogs set of four. The new stamp features a German shepherd on the large, blue stamp. The mini-set pays tribute to four breeds that are used by the United States military for guard duty, combat, and search & rescue.
Even though its appearance is somewhat wolf-like, the breed only dates back to 1899 and was developed for herding sheep. It is perfect for military roles due to strength, intelligence, and trainability. Its coloration is usually tan with a black saddle.
As with all of my cachets, each is individualy hand painted. When I was stationed at Hurlburt Air Force Base with the First Air Commando Wing, German shepherds were used for guard and security purposes. Because of that memory I decided to name each of our four major military branches on the covers. The first is the Air Force. Also, the lettering at the top of each envelope is hand painted to coordinate with the stamp - in this case blue.
The first of my Military Working Dogs, the German shepherd, is now ready. Collins #A5901 - $16.50.
