Created by George Washington during the Revolutionary War, the Purple Heart is the oldest continuous military' decoration in the world. It also was the first medal awarded to common soldiers. Today the Purple Heart has a likeness of General Washington prominently displayed.
It is awarded to members of the United States armed forces wounded by the enemy and is awarded posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action. It has been awarded to 1.8 million service personnel and veterans.
The hand painted cachet depicts five American troops carrying a wounded comrade from the battlefield. Evacuation to a rear area for medical treatment is the objective, and a helicopter appears in the distance ready to pick up the wounded troops. A Purple Heart awaits the injured serviceman.
