Buckboard 1880s & Ambulance 1860s
Spring 2024 Mail Sale Commentary
Lot 7 D1001 — Ambulance 1860s and Buckboard 1880s (PNC) — 6-21-85
This very attractive early cover has a double cachet and a dual (same day) first day of issue on the same cover. Additionally, it has a plate number on one of the ambulance stamps, making it a PNC. To the upper left is an early Buckboard being pulled by a trotting horse. In the background, period houses give a feeling of depth to the scene. To the lower right, an early ambulance approaches a city corner. The horse has assumed a slight balk suggesting unseen on-coming traffic. The stamp and cancel configuration are a little unusual and add a nice touch. To the upper right is a pair of the 8.3-cent Ambulance stamps. Upper center, between the two hand-painted cachets is a pair of the 4.9-cent Buckboard stamps. Connecting and tying all four stamps is the official Reno, Nevada first day of issue cancel, but it is applied on a diagonal angle which is really quite different and attractive as a prominent part of the cover. I believe this is the first time this PNC cover has appeared in one of my mail sales.
