Frederic Auguste Bartholdi

Designed the Statue of Liberty

Winter 2020 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 13 F1001 — Frederic Auguste Bartholdi — (7-18-85)

Bartholdi was a French sculptor who is best known for designing the Statue of Liberty. It was a gift from the people of France to the people of America and was installed on Bedloe Island in New York Harbor. It became the ultimate symbol of freedom for all those arriving in the United States. My hand painted cachet shows the towering statue as arriving passengers line the rail of an ocean liner. One of the main streets of Butler, New Jersey, is Bartholdi Avenue. My parents met at and graduated from Butler High School on that avenue. So did L They married in St. Anthony's Church on that avenue. So did Linda and I. The stamp has a magenta first day of issue postmark from Butler, New Jersey, where Bartholdi Avenue played such a significant role in our lives.
