This is a 33-cent airmail and was issued to honor this aviation pioneer. The "entire" hand-painted cachet shows the finish of an early air race as the winning plane takes the checkered flag. The plane is a Verville-Packard R-I and is painted a bright red with yellow trim. Behind the R-1 is a spectator filled grandstand under a cloud-filled sky.

The stamp has a Garden City, New York bullseye cancel.
