Great Americans
Walter Lippmann political commentator
Collins Cover Announcement
WALTER LIPPMANN
This is a six-cent denomination in the Famous American Series to honor the famous journalist. The first thing you'll notice is the unusual way that I arranged the stamps both to meet the postage requirements and to accommodate my hand-painted cachet.
Four stamps are affixed to the left in an "L" and they are tied to the cover by the official Minneapolis, Minnesota bullseye cancels. Four additional stamps are placed on the right side in a reverse "L" and they are canceled unofficially from New York City with a large bullseye. Lippmann spent much of his career writing for New York newspapers, so I felt that this was the cancel to "go for". It was difficult because, in addition to working against the clock (as I always do), we had to work backwards against the time zone from Minnesota to New York and against the city traffic (a great contrast to Main Street in Ozark, Arkansas). I did make it by the skin of my teeth and, as a result, my Lippmann cover has a fitting First Day cancel from the Big Apple -- New York, New York.
The hand-painted cachet is one you'll truly appreciate. A "working" desk top is depicted complete with steaming cup of coffee. The indispensable typewriter has center stage -- (and would you believe...each of its' keys is hand painted? (Whew!) Other common desk items complete the cachet, but also thrown in is a small globe showing the Western Hemisphere which symbolizes the world which Mr. Lippmann covered during his career in journalism.
This is a fine FDC -- eight stamps, two cancels (Minneapolis and New York City) and a distinctive hand-painted cachet.
Item #L1001. $7.50
