PUBLIC EDUCATION

The stamp for this issue is quite attractive -- antique inkwell with quill pen; a sheet of paper with the "ABC's" faithfully practiced (whatever happened to penmanship?); a pair of old-fashioned glasses; and, the traditional apple. All of these nostalgic items are shown on a light wood surface -- a thoughtful and well designed presentation.

My hand-painted cachet shows a girl and boy on their way to school with the family farm behind. It is a country lane. Barefoot, they each carry their shoes, and he totes the lunch bucket while she holds the strapped books. I used some really bright colors to contrast with the earthy colors of the cultivated fields, grassy lawns and tree foliage.

Picking up the stamps in Boston, I traveled to the small New York community of Youngsville for my unofficial cancel. While there, a horse-drawn, lumbering hay wagon went by carrying six or seven youngsters, and I envisioned a couple of them being the two walking down my cachet lane.

A nice COLLINS -- eye pleasing stamp, eye catching cachet and a "true" First Day cancel from Youngsville done on the actual day of issue. Item #N1001. $7.50
