Collins Cover Announcement
TRICYCLE - 1880's
This six cent Transportation Series issue may well be the most "unique" of all my 1985 covers. The stamp features an oldfashioned tricycle with two large rear wheels an one small front wheel. I saw the potential and pedaled ahead. My cachet design features the tricycle but I left the small front wheel off. But never fear my plan worked to perfection as the placement of the bullseye cancel made it the front wheel of the cachet tricycle. You really need to see this FDC as I cannot adequately describe how nicely the actual First Day cancel becomes part of the cachet. This COLLINS is truly something different, and I know that in future years it will be sought out as a most unusual collectible.
To compliment the tricycle, nearby are other period playthings -- an antique rocking horse, a doll and a couple of blocks. A sleeping puppy adds to the nostalgic serenity. To the upper left, an additional strip of three has the "First Day of Issue" cancel.
I am really gratified by the final appearance of this handpainted cover -- as the use of the cancel as an integral part of the cachet design is a really rare occurrence. It is the first time I've ever done so, and I would urge you to seriously consider adding this beauty to your collection. Item #W901 - $7.50
Summer 2023 Mail Sale Commentary
Lot 23 W901 — Tricycle — Transportation Series — 5-6-85
This hand painted Collins is quite distinctive. A single is postmarked with the bullseye first day of issue cancel, and I've incorporated it into the cachet design by making it the third wheel of the tricycle. An additional three stamps are postmarked by the slogan cancel. The cachet features the cycle plus period toys including rocking horse, doll, and blocks. The family dog enjoys a restful nap. This marks the first time this cover has appeared in one of my mail sales.
