Pacific Coast Rain Forest

WINTER WREN

Deep within the dense interior of the rain forest, a small bird perches on a tiny branch as a symbol of the delicate balance of a living ecosystem. Plant and animal communities in a defined habitat such as the rain forest are collectively known as a biome. The characteristics of climate are among the most decisive features that create and define each biome.

My hand painted cachet features a winter wren amid the contrasting shapes of broad, veined leaves and fragile, diminutive berries. This example of First Day Cover art is one in which each brush stroke of watercolors transforms a one-dimensional drawing into a wonderful conveyance of a realistic and natural look at the wren in its pleasing habitat. The final appearance of this one exceeded my expectations.

The tenth and final cover in this unusual set will be announced in the near future. It will feature a family of distinctively marked and very beautiful harlequin ducks. This project entniled learning a great deal about our Pacific Coast Rain Forest, and I'm very pleased to now offer one of our feathered friends found in that rich and lush habitat.
