LOUSE NEVELSON

This hand painted cachet features a young Nevelson during her early career. At age 20 she began to study painting and drawing at the Art Students League in New York City. In 1931 she studied with artist Hans Hofmann in Munich, Germany and worked with Mexican muralist Diego Rivera in 1932.

Her first solo exhibition was in 1941 at New York City's Nierendorf Gallery. By then she had begun sculpting with stone, terra-cotta, and wood. It was in this field that she would gain world-wide fame for her innovative creations. The Whitney Museum of American Art presented the first major retrospective of her art in 1967, and today it has the largest collection of Nevelson works in the world.

This cover features two of the new stamps with a New York City First Day postmark. The other three stamps on the set appear on my C3202 with that cachet depicting an older Nevelson late in her career. I'm pleased to present sculptor Louise Nevelson. Item #C3201 - $12.75.
