Louise Nevelson
Sculptor
Collins Cover Announcement
LOUISE NEVELSCN
In its simplest terms, sculpture is three-dimensional art. It is commonly recognized in the form of statues representing human figures, but it can extend to any representation made of solid materials, including the most abstract images.
Born in 1899, it was not until the 1950s that American sculptor Louise Nevelson began to experience commercial success with geometric arrangements of wood pieces. She began to create wall-size ensembles of open wood boxes and shapes painted a single color. The five new stamps are based on her work from this period.
Nevelson later experimented with materials other than wood, including plastics, transparent synthetics, and metals. She continued to work until her death in 1988. My hand painted cachet captures the distinct characteristics of this gifted sculptor during her most productive years in the 1950s and 1960s. Her profile portrait is enhanced by placing it against a black background. I chose three of the new stamps with similar color shades for this cover and will feature the other two on a cover that presents the artist in her earlier years.
This is an intriguing and interesting FDC in the field of creative artistic expression. I'm pleased to present, with three of the new stamps, Louise Nevelson. Item #C3202 - $13.25.
