Deep Sea Creatures
Medusa
When the Deep Sea Creature stamps were released on October 2, 2000, a unique ceremony took place. In the California auditorium of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, guests watched the First Day of cancellation being unveiled by an underwater robot tethered to the research vessel Point Lobos. The robot was 1476 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean.
Deep sea Medusa of the class Hydrozoa is a relative of the jellyfish that is found in more shallow waters. They have no skeletal structure, and propulsion of its dome-shaped membrane is accomplished by undulating movements. Long tentacles bearing stinging cells capture prey and carry the food to the mouth on the underside of the dome.
The Medusa concludes this gorgeous set. The bright colors against the black background are vibrant and eye-catching. I'm sure you'll love this hand painted cachet and the other four in the series. Be sure you have them all now before I sell out of stock because, in future years, collectors will surely be seeking them as "treasures of the deep." Collins #B3305 - $12.25.
