THOMAS WOLFE

This new stamp was issued on October 3, 2000, which marked the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Thomas Wolfe. He is considered to be one of the greatest American autobiographical novelists of the 20th Century. Wolfe is best known for his 1929 novel Look Homeward, Angel which is based on his early life in North Carolina. His other books were Of Time and the River; The Web and the Rock; and You Can't Go Home Again. He died in 1938 of tuberculosis.

From the age of six until sixteen, Thomas Wolfe lived in a twenty-nine room boardinghouse, and his first novel -Look Homeward, Angel - reflects his experiences growing up there. My hand painted cachet shows Thomas and his mother, Julia, on the porch that wrapped around the building. His mother had bought the house, known locally as the "Old Kentucky Home" in 1906 and operated it until she died in 1945. It was opened as a museum in 1949 with original furnishings, personal family items, and the medallion bed on which all eight Wolfe children were born.

My cachet depicts the Smokey Mountains in the background, and the foreground prominently highlights the stone angel from his story.
