The Postal Service issued a block of four new stamps to salute the courage and leadership of outstanding American soldiers in World War I and World War II. The two servicemen honored for their heroics in the First World War were Alvin C. York and John L. Hines. Those chosen for the Second World War were Audie L. Murphy and Omar N. Bradley. This series of four cachets will be a nice addition to your collection, as military I-DCs are a favorite topical subject for many in the hobby.

My first cachet in this mini-set of four honors Audie Murphy. Born the son of Texas sharecroppers in 1924, he became the most decorated U.S. combat soldier of World War II. Almost single-handedly repelling an attack by infantry and tanks, Murphy was credited with killing more than 240 of the enemy

while wounded and in mortal risk.

Audie Leon Murphy received the Medal of Honor along with numerous other decorations from the United States, France, and Belgium. The well-regarded veteran played himself in the film biography entitled To Hell and Back.

He died in a 1971 plane crash and was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. Each year his grave site receives more visitors than any other with the exception of President John F. Kennedy. A true American hero and distinguished soldier - Audie L. Murphy. Collins #I3204 - $12.25.
