Each year I produce two special cachets just for my subscribers in good standing. I do not offer these covers to my non-subscriber collectors, nor can my subscribers order extras beyond their regular subscription number. As a result, these special editions become very scarce and very coveted Collins First Day Covers. It is rare, indeed, for one to appear on the open market, and, when it does, it attracts much interest and demand.

Being a "Baseball" topical featuring four of the absolute all-time "greats" of the game, this cover will certainly become one of the prized gems of your Collins collection. Four of the Legends stamps are canceled on the issue date and feature Roberto Clemente, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, and Babe Ruth. With those four Hall of Famers on one Collins cover, you can be sure that this one is going to become a classic FDC within the hobby.

For each of the players, I've included a small, individual hand painted cachet. Based on an actual photograph, I show Roberto Clemente extending his glove above the right field fence and taking a home run away from the "Say Hey Kid" - Willie Mays. Jackie Robinson was a potent base stealer (hence the saying "As quick as Jackie Robinson," and I show him sliding safely into home plate. Lou Gehnrig was, and is, one of the most admired players of all time, and I show "The Iron Horse" with one of his engaging smiles. For the Babe, it was a no-brainer as to what I wanted to show - legendary home run number sixty from the "Sultan of Swat."

Lot 28 P3201 — Legends of Baseball — (Subscriber-Only Limited Edition) — 7/6/2000

Back in 2000, I decided to do a special cover just for my subscribers (those getting each of my new FDCs) at that time. This cover is not part of my Legends of Baseball set (03201 to 03220). It is an amazing Collins exclusive with four of the greatest baseball players of all time being together on one first day cover. To the right side of the envelope are the Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Legends stamps. To the left are the Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente stamps. The hand painted cachet is in the center of the envelope and is broken down into four separate scenes:

Jackie's iconic stealing of home; Roberto robbing Willie Mays of a homer with a leaping catch; Babe hitting his legendary 60th home run; a smiling portrait of Lou — the Iron Horse. It's an extraordinary Collins cachet and is destined to become one of the most sought-after baseball covers in the hobby. It will almost never appear for sale because it was made just for subscribers (with no extras available), and they certainly will be keeping it in their collections
