DENALI - MOUNT MCKINLEY

80c High-Value Denomination

This is the third time that Mount McKinley — the highest mountain in North America — appears on a United States postage stamp. The first time was in 1937 on a 30 stamp commemorating the Alaskan Territory, and the second time was on a 150 value issued in 1972 for the National Parks Centennial. By definition, any value of fifty-cents or more is classified by collectors as a "high-value" issue, and these 1,DCs are particularly prized by many in the hobby. With a face value of eighty cents, this individually hand painted Collins cachet falls into that category.

The snow-capped peak of McKinley towers more than 20,000 feet above sea level. It is called Denali or "high one" by the native Athabaskan people. Named for President William McKinley, it is the main focal point of the 600 mile-long Alaska Range in the Denali National Park and Preserve. When established in 1917, the sole purpose of the park was to serve as a wildlife preserve. Accordingly, I decided to use my cachet to present three of the more majestic species of Alaskan wildlife. In the center of the cachet is the awesome grizzly bear also known in this region as the Alaskan brown bear. It can grow to an incredible 1700 pounds, and, when it rises on its hind legs and stands upright, this intimidating bear truly symbolizes wild America. To the right is the majestic bald eagle. In this first year of the new century, I have had occasion to use our national bird on several of my covers. It is an image that inspires historical significance, current patriotic pride, and an ongoing high profile link to the beauty of America's natural bounty. To the left of the grizzly is the wary and agile dall's sheep found only in Alaska and Canada's Northwest Territories. In the spring, older rams often remain solitary as they look to engage in butting contests to determine herd leaders. The ram, with massive curved horns flaring out from the head, captures the essence of the high peaks.
