Woodie Wagon

Wood-paneled vehicles, or Woodies, captured the imagination of the American public from the 1930s through the 1950s. Originally they were designed as upscale cars for wealthy buyers, but Woodies were soon marketed as practical transportation for families. They were ideal for vacations and shopping trips.

In the 1960s, Woodies were well past their prime popularity years and became practical beach transportation for cash-strapped surfers. The background design on the new stamp suggests a warm, sunny day by the ocean, and that is the theme I decided upon for my hand painted cachet_ The '41 Mercury Woodie sits on a sandy beach with palm trees in the background. It's understood that unseen surfers wait nearby for the "perfect wave." The stamp has a three-quarter rear view, and my cachet has a bold three-quarter front view. To add to the appearance of this cover the title text is in 3-dimensional block letters, and the face of each letter is painted in a beach and surf scene. It's very different and effective!

Since the new stamp is a 15-cent denomination, I've used three of them in an unusual vertical format to meet the first class postage requirement. Two First Day postmarks tie the stamps to the envelope. This Collins FDC is one you won't want to miss. Classic automobiles are always popular, and this one could easily become a quick sell-out. It certainly will be a sought-after collectible in the months and years ahead, and I believe it will increase nicely in value as time goes on.
