Carnivorous Plants

Cobra Lily

Cover Announcement

The "cobra" completes this mini-set of four carnivorous plant FDCs. This aptly-named plant resembles a cobra about to strike its prey and is native to the West Coast of the United States. The one shown on the stamp has attracted an unwary wasp. Insects are lured to this lily by the sweet-tasting nectar at the mouth of the trap. As the insect enters the plant, it gets confused by transparent "windows" which are very thin areas in the cobra's surface.

Tryrng to exit through these windows, it cannot get out and is forced to the back of the plant by backward-pointing hairs. Upon reaching a slippery area, the prey plunges downward into a water reservoir and is then absorbed as food. In the spring, a reddish leaf-like flower blooms and helps to attract insects.

Carnivorous plants can be found throughout the world, and over 500 species are known. The four individually hand painted cachets in this set will make an attractive and unusual addition to your cover collection. I am pleased to present the Cobra Lily. Collins #R3402 - $12.25.
