This stamp celebrates two important Islamic festivals — Eid ul-Adha which is the Festival of Sacrifice and Eid ul-Fitr, which is the Festival of Fast-Breaking. The design on the new stamp is an ornate expression that means "eid mubarak" or blessed festival. Muslims wish each other "eid mubarak" during both of these festivals, and that expression can be paraphrased as "May your religious holiday be blessed."

My hand painted cachet, done in twilight tones, shows three travelers on their pilgrimage to Mecca. The watercolors on this cover really make it an attractive one to behold.

In view of September 11th, I would like to offer a few personal comments. As President Bush has often stressed, Islam is a religion of peace, and evil ones should not evoke God in their horrendous deeds. As part of the 2001 U.S. stamp program, this Collins cachet for the Eid stamp is produced in the spirit of the vast majority of Muslims who are peace-loving citizens of the world.
