This attractive pair of new definitives follows the peach and pear stamps of a few years ago. Both of my individually hand painted cachets for this issue will be colorful additions to your Collins collection.

Johnny Appleseed

John Chapman was born in 1774 in Massachusetts. By the time he was 25, he had become an accomplished nursery man and had planted many apple trees in the western portions of New York and Pennsylvania. When the fertile lands west of the Ohio River were opened for settlement, John was among the first to explore the new territory. Later it would become the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.

He was a kind man who never carried a gun and soon came to be known as "Johnny Appleseed" throughout the territory which he roamed for almost half a century. The sources of his seeds were the cider presses of western New York and Pennsylvania, and there is no way to estimate how many millions of seeds he sowed in his lifetime throughout the land south of the Great Lakes between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Without a doubt, many of his seedling trees crossed the Plains in the covered wagon trains destined for our western states.

This hand painted cachet pays tribute to John Chapman and his service to our country. From his hand, bountiful orchards blossomed throughout the land. All of us can be grateful for the dedicated and remarkable efforts of this unique man known as Johnny Appleseed. Item #Y3301 - $12.25
