American Bats

The Red Bat

There are about 45 different kinds of bats living in the United States. They consume half their weight in flying insects each day. Bats do occasionally get rabies — but much less often than other animals. Over a 26-year period, only eight human fatalities in the U.S. and Canada were attributed to rabid bats.

The red bat weighs about 1/2 ounce and has a wingspan of one foot. They have short, rounded ears and various shades of reddish fur. Their habitat is forested regions from Canada through the United States to Central America. My hand painted cachet shows one of the tiny creatures in an adorable pose as it settles into its roost for the night. The Red Bat — Collins #F3601 — $12.25.
