American Bats

Pallid Bat

Collins Cover Announcement

American Bats

The Pallid Bat

Large, pale, forward-swept ears are the distinctive characteristic of this bat. It lives in the American West — including the entire coastline from Canada to Mexico. Its body is only 4 to 5 inches long, but the wingspan is up to 15 1/2 inches. They roost in small colonies from about a dozen up to a hundred and come out late at night to feed on ground-dwelling insects. Incredibly, the large ears actually hear the footsteps of the insects, which is how the prey is detected.

Several times each year, my finished cachets exceed expectations. This is the case with the American Bat cachets. As you can see from the enclosed illustrations, the cachets are very dramatic, but what really make them so special are the realistic colors that only hand painting can achieve. In the years ahead, these FDCs will be actively sought. Don't miss them. Pallid Bat — Coffins 4F3602. Leaf-Nosed Bat — Collins /4'3604. Priced at $12.25 each.
