American Bats

The Spotted Bat

On the Bat Conservation International website, the spotted bat is described as "one of America's most striking mammals." Its body is only 4 inches long, but it has a wingspan of 14 inches. This species has long, silky fir with large white spots on its shoulders and rump for which it is named. It has large translucent pinkish ears, which are the biggest of any bat in the Western Hemisphere.

Its range is from British Columbia in Canada down through the western states to northern Mexico. This bat feeds almost exclusively on moths, which it captures high above the ground.

In recent years, the beneficial aspects of bats have improved their image. Most importantly, they are relentless hunters of undesirable insects. And, in many parts of the world, especially China, bats symbolize good luck and happiness. This mini-set of four highly unusual and very attractive hand painted cachets will add a dramatic touch to your collection. I'm happy to offer this fourth and final FDC to complete my American Bats. The Spotted Bat — Collins #F3603 —$12.25.
