Women in Journalism

Collins Cover Announcement

WOMEN IN JOURNALISM

Ethel L. Payne

At times, President Dwight D. Eisenhower refused to take questions from this persistent reporter on the subject of Civil Rights. His stance on refusing to recognize her at press conferences actually served to push the issue to the forefront of national debate.

One of the stories she wrote about was the famous Rosa Parks saga and her refusal to sit in the back of the bus. My hand painted cachet depicts this important moment in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. It's a somber turning point in American history, and I'm glad that it is now documented on Collins cachets.

Payne worked as a reporter for the Chicago Defender for 27 years. She traveled the world covering wars in Africa and Vietnam. After her work for the Defender, she became a radio and TV commentator for the CBS News Network. At this time in her career, she also wrote a nationally syndicated newspaper column for ten years.

I'm pleased to offer this next cover in my mini-set of Famous Women in Journalism. It honors the extraordinarily talented and professional Ethel Lois Payne. Collins #G3603 — $12.25.
