WOMEN IN JOURNALISM

Marguerite Higgins

Higgins advanced the cause for allowing female war correspondents as she covered with distinction World War Il, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. In fact, it was during her assignment to Vietnam in 1965 that she contracted a tropical disease that led to her premature death on January 3, 1966 at age 46.

To honor her accomplishments, I decided to produce a cachet depicting Vietnam. An American Green Beret stands vigilantly with a waterfront in the background. A typical coastal boat rides at anchor as a Vietnamese woman carries a load of local produce in a series of baskets suspended from a human yoke. Drawing from personal experience, the details in this cachet are very accurate, and I suspect it will also be highly sought by military collectors.

During World War Il, The New York Herald Tribune sent Higgins to Europe, and in 1945, she received an Army Campaign Ribbon. Her front-line reporting during the Korean War resulted in a Pulitzer Prize. She continued to cover international affairs during the 1950s and, in 1963, was assigned by Newsday to cover Vietnam.

I'm pleased to offer this cover as a tribute to a superb female journalist — Marguerite Higgins. Collins #G3604 - $12.25
