Antique Toys – Non-Denominated
Steam Locomotive
Fred Collins Signature
Collins Cover Announcement
Antique Toys
Steam Locomotive
This new stamp piCtures a mechanical locomotive made of cast iron and stamped tin. It is brightly colored and inscribed "Jupiter." This historic engine was designed by Walter McQueen of Schenectady, New York. It was built in 1868 for the Central Pacific Railroad.
For the non-denominated versions of the Antique Toys series, I decided that I would keep my options open to decide on cachet artwork that would be true to the theme of the stamp but not necessarily the same portrayal. In this case, keeping with the topic of railroading, I decided to show an antique toy that features Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse riding on a handcar. These small railroad vehicles rode the tracks and were self-propelled by riders pumping a long handle. They were mostly used by track maintenance personnel.
This hand painted FDC is destined to become a very popular Collins collectible. It combines the topics of Disney and railroading, and that is a formula that can't be beat. It also is a truly Americana piece as it shows a very early "Mickey" who went on to become the world's most famous and beloved mouse.
Hand coloring plays another important part in this cover as the attire of the mice is very vivid as are the colors of the locomotive on the new stamp. A quick sell-out is anticipated, so don't let Mickey and Minnie speed down the track and disappear behind the bend. I'm pleased to offer this new Antique Toy cover with the "Jupiter" locomotive stamp and the Disney handcar cachet. Collins # - Q3501 $12.25.
