Sickle Cell Disease Awareness
Inherited Blood Disorder
Collins Cover Announcement
SICKLE CELL DISEASE AWARENESS
Hemoglobin is a protein that red blood cells use to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Sickle cell is a disease that affects the hemoglobin. Red cells with notmal protein are smooth and round and pass through the veins and arteries easily. Red blood cells with sickle cell change their shape to that of a sickle after oxygen is released. They become hardened and sticky which, along with the irregular shape, restricts their passage through the veins and arteries. The reduced flow can damage organs and cause anemia, swelling, fatigue, stroke, jaundice, and pain.
A simple blood test can diagnose sickle cell, and early treatment is the best way to reduce the effects of the disease. Children and young adults can benefit from blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants. With this in mind, my hand painted cachet shows two happy children enjoying the pleasures of youth in their backyard. I am pleased to offer this cover which conveys the importance of sickle cell disease awareness.
