Yosemite National Park

Collins Cover Announcement

Yosemite National Park

Golden Eagle

The golden eagle is majestic with a range from northern Canada and down through the western United States. It has a wingspan of seven feet, and it glides and soars with flat wings and only occasionally needs to flap them_ When perched, it can reach almost YAfeet tall in size,_so it is really alarge bird of prey. The coloring of the feathers is quite beautiful with dark and medium browns and just a slight glimmer of gold on the back of the neck which is mostly visible when in flight. I believe this is the first time that a golden eagle has appeared on a Collins cachet.

Yosemite is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. It's a large national park that was established in 1890. It has spectacular waterfalls, lovely meadows, and old forests that include giant sequoias. High cliffs border Yosemite Valley, and it is here that the golden eagle soars wild and free. In the hand painted cachet, the regal bird perches on a riverside limb with the mountainous peaks rising in the background. Along with the Bryce Canyon mountain lion offered previously and the Smokey Mountain red wolf yet to come, this First Day Cover will be a fine addition to any collection.

The 84¢ Yosemite airmail stamp with the golden eagle cachet is now available — Collins #U4001 — $14.00
