Dr. Jonas Salk - First Successful Polio Vaccines

Collins Cover Announcement

Jonas Salk - 63c

During the 1950s, this eminent medical researcher developed, tested, and refined his polio vaccine. It became available in 1955 and was looked upon as a medical miracle since it prevented the dreaded infantile paralysis (polio) that crippled or killed thousands upon thousands of individuals, many of whom were children.

In 1962 Jonas established the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California where molecular biology and genetics are studied. He remained there as director until his retirement in 1985. As one would expect, he received numerous awards and honors throughout his lifetime including the "Presidential Medal of Freedom" in 1977.

My hand painted cachet has a portrait of Salk with a large insert showing two healthy children playing at the seashore. It's a privilege to announce this First Day Cover that honors Dr. Jonas Salk. Collins #X4001 — $13.50.
