Baseball Sluggers

Mickey Mantle Holding Bats Cachet

Subscriber Only Edition

Collins Cover Announcement

Baseball Sluggers

Special Limited-Edition Variety

In addition to the recently announced set of four "Baseball Sluggers" I decided to produce a special cachet for Mickey Mantle. Although not a Yankee fan while growing up (we were a National League family — with members following either the New York Giants or Brooklyn Dodgers), there is and was no doubt that Mantle was one of the most awesome and talented sluggers that ever played the game. When he retired in 1968, he had been named to an incredible 20 All-Star teams during his amazing career. Mickey was a switch-hitter who batted on both sides of the plate, and he became famous because of his long distance, powerful home run . He was, indeed, a Major League slugger supreme.

This special cachet shows Mantle with his youthful grin holding three bats — the tools of his trade. The stamp is affixed in the lower right corner, and it's tied to the envelope with a very nice first day of issue pictorial postmark showing a batter taking a swing. This is the final Collins cover that I produced for the Baseball Sluggers issue. As with my previous baseball cachets over the years (Robinson, Ruth, Clemente, Gehrig, etc.), I expect that this special limited-edition FDC will certainly become an excellent one to have in your collection. Mickey Mantle — Baseball Slugger extraordinaire. Collins #Z4107 — 13.25.

Winter 2023 Mail Sale

Lot 23 Z4107 — Mickey Mantle — Baseball Slugger "Holding Bats" Limited Cachet Variety — 7/15/06

This is the first time this cachet has been in my mail sales. Mantle is regarded by many to be the best switch-hitting slugger in baseball history. He played center field for the New York Yankees from 1951 to 1968 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. "The Mick" was elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999. This one has a super pictorial first day of issue postmark showing a hitter and canceled in the Bronx, New York — site of Yankee Stadium. An opportunity.
